The Grand Canyon is very Grand. [Aug. 14th, 2007|12:31 pm]

After weeks of bugging the Win to go camping, he finally succumbed under my relentless prattering of campingcampingcamping and we drove up to the North Rim, Grand Canyon. My lab mates were highly amused at the camping equipment we had acquired which in addition to a tent of course, included a (shit) shovel, expensive firewood, lamp/splunker torch, foam mats, tarp, campstove and propane fuel, collapsible water tank, etcetcetc. We were obviously trying to camp in comfort, none of that stake hammering OBS nonsense! We stopped short of getting the air mattress (with bedsheets), camp chairs, camp table, camp tablecloth and camp tablecloth pins as that would've been going slightly overboard to the point of ridiculous. The lab mates also thought we were slightly crazy to drive 7 hrs (1hr for lunch!) to sleep on the ground in 8 degree (Celsius!) weather and potentially get gored by javelinas/coyotes/bears. Thankfully all we heard were coyotes "singing" at night as well as squirrels jostling at our tent for food in the morning and trying to carry the expensive atas firewood away. The "primitive" campground we were at had suprising clean compost toilets (no need for the shovel), picnic table and bench, a fire pit for your campfire, a water point, and parking!! None of that OBS nonsense! Heh.

We had previously gone up to the South Rim at the Grand Canyon last year, where most people usually go, and did the usual drive by sightseeing, flitting through various view points. However, the North Rim, 4 hrs away, was totally different. Less people, less jostling, more ponderosa pines, very Salem. High Country. The ponderosa pine forest was burnt at various parts, giving the landscape a stark alien beauty. I would highly recommend anyone planning to do the Grand Canyon to also extend a trip to the North Rim, the views you get there are more than worth the long drive up, which is also extremely beautiful in itself.

And this just suddenly pops out at you after driving through miles and miles of rock, sand and shrub ... the Vermillion Cliffs on one side, and the Glen (not Grand) Canyon on the other.

Let's go back .... SOON!

OBS... LOL.

The deer in that photos seems to be licking its chops rather alarmingly! Great views. Camping is still not my thing though... Unless it's like luxury safari or something. I'm too gu-niang ;)

I cannot believe you actually camped.
The thought of having no proper toilets is already giving me hives.
